Winter Learning Journey Day 1: 100% PURE New Zealand

Did you know With a patchwork history of Māori, European, Pacific Island and Asian cultures, New Zealand has become a melting-pot population - but one with some uniting features that make it unique in the world

Today, of the 4.4 million New Zealanders (informally known as Kiwis), approximately 69% are of European descent, 14.6% are indigenous Māori, 9.2% Asian and 6.9% non-Māori Pacific Islanders.
Geographically, over three-quarters of the population live in the North Island, with one-third of the total population living in Auckland. The other main cities of Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton are where the majority of the remaining Kiwis dwell.

  1. Kia ora Giovanni and welcome the Winter Learning Journey blogging programme. We are SOOO happy to have you blogging with us this holiday.

I can see that you have already posted five great blogs - good on you! I will enjoy reading all of them. For this particular post I really enjoyed your description of New Zealand. I agree with you that it is a true 'melting pot' population. I was originally born in Canada but now live and feel very 'at home' in New Zealand (NZ). There are so many of us born elsewhere who have found our way to NZ and made our lives here. I wonder what the demographic breakdown of New Zealand will be in 50 years. Do you think that it will change much from its current state? Will we have more people moving into New Zealand from other countries over the next few decades? I suspect so...

Well, we will just have to wait and see, I suppose. In the meantime, I hope that you will enjoy learning more about New Zealand as it currently is.

    Happy blogging, Giovanni!

    Best,
    Rachel :)
