Pollution Explanation

Learning Intention: To write an explanation about a topic
This week for writing, we were practicing writing explanations. We were making sure we know what to do, so when it comes to testing, I will make a powerful text. I chose the topic pollution in our oceans, because there are a lot of rubbish in our oceans, and no one is doing anything about it. I wrote about the sea life, the oceans, and why it's important to take care. This was awesome and fun.

Pollution In Our Oceans

Due to our careless action, rubbish ends up in our oceans. As a result, our environment and sea life are harmed. This is not acceptable! Right now there are about 17.6 billion pounds (equivalent to 57,000 blue whales) in our oceans today. Around 700 different sea life species are affected by pollution. Would you like it if your home was jammed with rubbish?...

The majority of plastic that lies on the ground ends up in drains which lead to oceans, lakes and rivers. The most affected sea creature by the pollution is a sea turtle. Over 1,000 sea turtles die each year from digesting plastic waste. Sea animals are really important, and they keep the ocean active. Picture our oceans and sea creatures, soon there will be nothing but pollution roaming in our waters. Because there is so much pollution in our oceans today, there are people who are ignoring the rubbish bins.

When your rubbish ends up in our oceans, it usually takes 1,000 years to biodegrade, which is just insane. Biodegrade is when something dissolves, or breaks down. Soon our sea life will be gone, and our oceans will become a dumping ground. Why isn’t anyone doing anything about it? Do you realise there is almost more pollution than animals in the ocean, they can become extinct really soon. Scientists have researched and discovered that 50 - 80 % of all life on earth is found in our waters. This means if we don’t take care of our oceans sea life will be gone.

If the oceans become polluted, it will affect the air we breathe. If the ocean is contaminated, it can’t produce the oxygen (The oceans produce half of the oxygen we breathe). If you still don’t think oceans are important then maybe this will change your mind. Our ocean transports heat from the equator, to the poles regulating our weather patterns. You see the ocean is the most important life on earth right now.

Wait… That’s right. Pollution is still wandering around in our oceans. If we don’t act now, the actions we make will affect our environment and future. So if you don’t want any of this to happen to our precious oceans, pick up rubbish, and please start putting it away properly.

10-5-7-10-10 Writing

Learning Intention: To use 10-5-7-10-10 to write a story

Today, we were using the 10-5-7-10-10 stratergy, used in reading or writing, to write a story. The story was made by planning what I was going to write, by looking at a picture of a mountain, sunset, or sunries, which made me think about a hiking story and getting a photo. I also made a problem in my story, to make it more interesting. My character of the story is named Azatulah. He is the person who is my main character if ny story. He is the one in trouble and needs help.

Mountain Hiking Story

“I’ve been waiting for so long!” “It’s been hours, and now I'm ready to get my photo of a beautiful sunset.” Azatulah took his tent and camp down. Now he’s ready to rock and roll. So, Azatulah grabbed his climbing equipment, and headed off towards the steep top.

On his way, he said to himself, “this place looks towering, way taller than I thought.” Anyway, he took his equipment out of his backpack and case. He sets up the rope, and lays out the new Technology he barely knows how to use. Next he throws the rope down to the ground, from the top of the mountain. It was a long fall, so he knew he was putting himself in danger.

Once he was ready, he grabbed his $400 camera, and his tools. “LESH GOO!” He attached all the gear to himself, and started to descend, down the mountain. The sun just started to rise, which was the perfect time. Azatulah’s goal was to get to ¾ of the mountain's height, just above the other one, so he can get a 2 in 1 shot. His original plan was to get the sunrise, but the sun being just above the mountain, was a dream photo.

Just as he pulled his camera out, he felt something above him. “What is that feeling?” He then realized something was wrong with his gear above. The technology must have a problem. He knew the only solution was to keep going down the mountain. If he went up, his weight would pull it down even more, which could cause the technology to break, and if it breaks, he will fall, because the rope would detach. He now has a lot of issues to solve.

The only one way to do so. Climbing down the mountain, and very slow, in case it breaks. Before he made his decision, he called the mountain rescue, and the police. Now all he has to do is get himself to safety. “Almost there?” sighed Azatulah, in relief. “I’m going to remain calm, and wait for rescue.

Finally the rescue team arrived. They climbed to him, so he knew once they reached me, he was safe. But then something horrible happened. The rope cut, so he grabbed on to the rescuers rope. And he was so frozen. They finally descended to safety, at the bottom of the mountain. “What happened?” Azatulah asked the rescuers. “Maybe there was an error with the technology, or something must have snapped while you were climbing. Azatulah was scared, but he still got his photos. His goal was now complete. “Next, I am going to climb Mount everest!” Said Azatulah in excitement.

5-7-10 Writing

Learning Intention: To write creativly using 5-7-10

Today for writing, we were learning about 5-7-10. It is a process you can use, to write a story. The 5-7-10, stands for 5 minutes, 7 minutes, and 10 minutes. What does that mean? The 5 minutes, is how much time to write as much as you can. The 7 minutes, is how much time you have to talk to your partner about your writing. The 10 minutes is how much time to continute your writing after talking to each other. First during the 5 minutes, I wrote about the storm starting, and them being worried, Then I walked about my story during the 7 minute part. Then I finished off with a good ending and the rest. This was fun and exciting because I like reading my own writing.

Lightning never strikes twice, does it?
That was the question that occupied their frightened minds as they crouched, huddling together, next the pile of dusty sacks in the base of the windmill. The storm finally unleashes its power, forcing the kids to move closer into the dark. Leaning against the wall as rain rapidly pours down. They haven't been this worried before, maybe something’s wrong, Jeff thinks this isn’t a good place to stay. Spencer informs Jeff about using this old place for years, but it has never been destroyed. The terrified kids now wonder what will happen next. As the storm silently calms down, the lightning strikes, which causes the roaring thunder to rise. All that was heard was booming thunder, like it was attempting to overpower an erupting volcano. Jeff was completely frozen, like he was preserved for dinner inside a freezer. Spence was too troubled to be scared, this catastrophic event was making him believe this spot was a bad one. The lightning strikes again, and now Spencer is confused. Lightning strikes twice? Eventually after a poor day, the loud, annoying trouble stops. Spencer creeps towards the opening, investigating the area from inside, making sure there was no more superstorm.

This week, we were writing poems. It was based on our ancestors. I wrote about them, and my culture. It is powerful, and it brings back memories. I used the 5 senses, powerful words, emotional words, and phrases, to make my poem stronger. My favorite part of my poem is where I talk about my ancestors travelling around the world, to find their home, and the path of success. I enjoy writing poems, because I like writing, and It is exciting. I love my poem, and I am really proud of myself.

Why Plastic Pollution Bad For Our Coastlines Explanation

Did you know, each year over 1 million marine mammals are suffering due to the plastic we are wasting? This is not okay! These marine mammals have been suffering from plastic, whether they mistake plastic for food, or even get captured in it, which makes them not able to digest. Plastic has a large effect towards our marine mammals. Plastic is a large, serious issue in our environment! Would you like it if your favourite beach was filled with plastic?

According to ecotricity, scientists have estimated that about 8 million tonnes of plastic have ended up in our oceans every year. The number of plastic waste ending up in oceans could decrease up to a higher number, unless we do something about it! The majority of plastic that lies on the ground ends up in drains, which then leads to our oceans, lakes and rivers. There are New Zealanders out there who have access to facilities for plastic, but why aren’t we doing any better for our environment?

Did you know that plastic takes about 1,000 years just to biodegrade! Plastic doesn’t actually fully degrade, it only disintegrates into smaller particles. About 252,000 tons of plastic are also headed into our landfills every year. A project “Love Your Coast” is one of the projects that are acting now to help have a healthier and cleaner future. Love Your Coast has organised groups of people from around New Zealand to help clean up our oceans and beaches, so our next few generations could be better.

We should act now, so we could have a cleaner future and environment. You could save the lives of marine mammals, by picking up at least a few pieces of rubbish!

L.I to create a explanation on why plastic pollution bad for our coastlines
This week for writing we made an explanation in groups. My group was Sione, Sakina, RJ, Afa, Karlos, Jayden and I. We talked about the marine animals, the oceans, the plastic and where it goes and how we should stop it. I found an interesting fact about 100 million tons of plastic found in our oceans. We presented this to 2 other people each. This was fun and refreshed my mind about explanations.

A shoe's life

Today our class made a story about a shoes life. I was working with Matthew for this activity. We had to sit back to back on the floor. We have a lot of writing about this story. We used Personifacation and the 5 senses to help us in the making of the story. Then we made a story about a shoes life like how the feet might smell. This is our story that we wrote:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't believe I have to do this again. It’s going to be a hard day. I don’t want to have to smell the odor from my owners socks, as he walks for 5 hours. EWWWW! Gross I can taste the sweat dripping from inside his socks. Oh well, I hope I get replaced some day. I see the dairy. OOH, is that chocolate I can smell, yum. Finally I can see home, I get to relax before another hard days of work. Oh no. I can see I pile of wet mud on the ground. NOO! I hate this so much. We get inside, I SCREAM! “go in the direction of the washing machine,”as he slowly walked. YEAH! I can now have a nice shower. I hope this doesn’t happen again? But, if it does, ill run away.

Using Commas: Cultural Celebration

Cultural Celebration Writing

‘Let me tell you about’ my favorite cultural celebration. My favorite celebration is halloween. I am always excited for halloween because I get lollies. I get home from school, then get ready in my scary costume. Halloween is in the afternoon on Thursday, October 31. My mum does special effects on my face as a scary character. I like zombies, so she makes me as a zombie with an arrow in its eye. She needed fake blood, make-up and an arrow. After my mum does my face I am ready to scare people.

We get into the car, and go to different places around Auckland, Panmure, so I can scare people. I scare people, say trick or treat, and get a full bag of lollies thinking, Halloween is the best celebration, it’s my favorite. I come home, eat lollies, and enjoy the rest of the night with my family.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Today we were writing about a Cultural Celebration to practice using commas. We use commas when we need a rest in a sentence, list things, Seperate Dialogue, City / Suburb, Before FANBOYS, Date / Year and, Introductory words. I used over 10 commas in my writing and used 6 out of 7 commas in places. Now I know where to put commas.

Explanation: Should NZ Ban Plastic Straws?

I think NZ should ban plastic straws because it is harming our sea creatures. There are plastic in our oceans and plastic straws are part of this pollution. This is bad, This is terrible, this is outrageous. Would you like it if you had a pond filled with fish and saw one of those fish going towards a dangerous straw meal? That ‘s Ridiculous.

Plastic straws can harm our sea animals which is bad. If a sea animal eats a plastic straw then people will have to do surgery to get the straw out. There was a sea turtle that had a straw stuck up its nose. A man on a boat came by as he saw the poor turtle, he then had to pull the straw out. Out of all the plastic in our oceans, 0.025 percent / % of that are straws. Wow that's a lot of straws. If a straw gets into an animal's digestive system, the animal could choke which can cause breathing problems or even sadly, death.

NZ should ban plastic straws because other countries like the United States have one of the worlds biggest plastic straw pollution. NZ shouldn’t be the country that is named after the most plastic straw polluted country in the world. It’s disgusting to see straws people used to drink and left on the beach and washed out to shore. Scientists had estimated about 3.8 billion straws pollute the ocean.

Imagine going to the fish and chip shop. You have an order for chips and a fish. You get the food and open it. It has plastic straws in it. How would you feel what would you do? What if it was a hot day and you wanted to go to the beach. The beach is filled up with straws. How would you feel if you couldn’t go for a swim? Because the ocean is as big as 361.9 billion square kilo meters the plastic straws would be about 1/200 of that.

NZ is a country that is surrounded by the ocean. What if there were no more sea animals near our country. What would you do to save the sea life from plastic straws? This is why I believe that we should ban plastic straws. This is why you should agree.

Point Of View: Plastic Straws

This week for writing we were creating a DLO that explains both perspectives of why plastic strwas should or shouldn't be banned. Nevaeh and I agreed to work together for this activity. We researched both sides of the perspectives and came up with what our opinion would be to this. Nevaeh and I came up with our opinion which was why we should ban plastic straws. We then were to explain what a fact is, a provocation, an opinion, a perspective and why it is important to say why you have the opinion you have. A fact is a peice of information that is true. An opinion is what you think in your point of view. A prespective is a point of view. It is important to say why you have the opinion you have because it could be a good opinion or someone or some people might agree to what your opinion is.

Speech: Why games shouldn't have cheat codes

This week we (LS2) presented our speeches. The people that wanted to enter the speech competition were to present in front of the class as practice in front of an audience and the others got to present in groups. I entered in the competition and presented in front of the class. If you entered the competition and your are picked for the competition, you and 2 other peoople would go meaning there are only 3 spots. I kind of liked doing speeches when we did this. Here is my speech below:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kia ora my name is Giovanni and I will be persuading you why I believe games shouldn’t have cheat codes. Do you think you’re a winner if you have used codes that you know will get you to the next level? I think you’re just fooling yourself.

85% of the games around the world have cheat codes. These codes are meant to be used when you complete the game so you can go on to explore and find more game secrets.

If you use cheats during a game against people not using them online, you could get banned for using cheats which means you can’t play anymore.

Lastly if you use cheat codes on a game it might be because you don’t know what the point of the game is. The point of the game is to win and try your best. If you cheat then your not really improving your skills. Where’s the fun in winning if you’ve won by cheating.

Some games have adventures, some are exciting and sometimes games can actually be more fun than you think without cheat codes.

What to do with fish?

What should we do with fish that we catch? Do we leave it or do we take it? People aren't being respectful and taking more fish. Well an interesting fact is that you should pick up a fish that you catch with a wet hand towel. This is because touching it with your hands could lead to taking off their coating which keeps them alive when they’re out of the water. Another interesting fact is that if you catch a fish and bring it and it is under or oversized then you could get a fine or even get your boat confiscated. Well this is why you should know what to do with fish.

The thing that you need to know is that you only take the amount of fish you can eat. Taking all the fish can lead to fish being instinct. Some fish catchers like to look for birds because the birds can tell you where fish are because they can see fish and will go down to the water to catch some. Sometimes you see plastic around in the waters which fish could eat so you can pick up that plastic. Another thing is If you go fishing and catch a fish you will need to make sure that you have a fish ruler. The reason is that if you don’t have a fishing ruler then you can’t measure your fish to make sure it is the correct size to take it. A snapper (fish) has to be 30 cm to be able to take it.

Whatever you do don’t take under and over sized fish because you could be taking away most of the fish in our oceans. If you take an undersized fish then they won’t have time to grow and won’t have a long lasting life in the water. Same for the oversized fish, but if you take oversized fish then you are taking away the opportunity for them to breed. If they breed then they can make more fish for our oceans.

Taking under or over sized fish can be a problem. If people keep catching and taking any sized fish it can lead to a problem which can include depleting the number of fish in our oceans or even not being able to have foods that include fish.

Information Report (Penguins)

What are Penguins?

Penguins are flightless birds that can be found in the south pole of Antarctica. Penguins can also be called a Spheniscidae which is their scientific name. Did you know that penguins can grow up to 1 Meter tall?

Penguins have all sorts of colors. One of the most colorful penguins called the Royal penguin is pretty colorful. It has the colors Yellow, Black, White and even faded bits of pink under their fins and feet. Penguins can get to the weight of 23 Kgs which is quite light.

Penguins like to eat a lot. They like to eat squid and krill. They also can eat crustacean if they find it. Penguins are carnivores (Meat Eaters).

Penguins Live in Antarctica in the south Pole. Which is a really cold place. Penguins don’t just live in Antarctica, but also Surprisingly penguins can also be found in these places. South America, New Zealand Australia and even Africa. Penguins spend 80% of their lives in the ocean, but Penguins do live only in the southern hemisphere.

Penguins are some interesting animals that thrive and survive in the cold areas of the world. Something very interesting about penguins is that most people think they are mammals because they can’t fly. This is why penguins are awesome.

Although Penguins might seem friendly and cute, they are one of the most robust animals on earth.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This weeks writing task was to create an information report about Penguins. The structure for an information report is T.I.P.S which stands for title, introduction, paragraphs and summary. Things you need to include in your information report are interesting facts, habitat, diet and appearance. One thing that I lernt new while writing about penguins is that penguins also live in africa. Something interesting I found out was that Penguins can weigh to about 23 Kg's. The one thing about penguins that I think is amazing is their ability to survive in their environment.

Paragraph Linking

LI: to correct certain structure and language features in a recount.

LI: to evaluate writing samples using the PBS writing rubric.
LI: to correct certain structure and language features in a recount.
This week for Reading we were learning about 4 topics. Paragraph linking, Sentence structure, paragraph structure and organising ideas. Our group was doing Paragraph linking. Paragraph linking is when you join one paragraph with another paragraph that dosn't have that much ideas.
I linked the paragraph that they got tired with the next paragraph leading to Mount Fuji. I joined those two paragraphs together bewcause of the little ideas the second paragraph had. then I just cut off a little word off and added one word and inked the paragraphs together to make one paragraph that still makes sense.
